Addiction. Incarceration. Death. These are a few factors that can render parents unable to care for their children. While foster care is a haven for some, many children find themselves adrift without a permanent home or struggling to bond with unfamiliar caregivers.
In these moments, grandparents and other older relatives often become unsung heroes. They open their hearts and homes, providing stability and love when it is needed most. By keeping children connected to their families, culture, and community, these relatives preserve bonds that might otherwise be lost.
But where do children go when their adoptive caregivers pass away?
For youth who have already lost a permanent connection to their parents, the loss of another relative caregiver is devastating. In grief, however, there is still hope. Greenlight Family Services’ Post-Adoption team is here to help light the way.
Victoria is one of many youth whom Greenlight has helped through post-adoption services. Victoria was born in 2007 to a mother struggling with substance abuse. For her safety and well-being, she was adopted at two years old by her great-grandparents. Sadly, when Victoria was 15 years old, her great-grandmother passed away, followed by her great-grandfather the next year. With both of her adoptive parents passed on, Victoria faced an uncertain future.
Fortunately, another hero stepped up. The day after the loss of her adoptive father, Victoria moved in with her older cousin Marshanika and her family. From that day on, these cousins established a strong and positive relationship. Victoria shared that Marshanika is easy to talk to, offers sound advice, and provides the guidance and support she needs. Marshanika has worked hard to provide stability, structure, and a sense of normalcy. Together, they developed routines and responsibilities that helped Victoria feel secure and included.

Angela Gore, MPA, Greenlight Family Development Specialist
The family was referred to Greenlight’s Post-Adoption team to receive guidance and resources in navigating the adjustment period. Family Development Specialist Angela Gore, MPA, built an ongoing, supportive relationship to the family that lasts to this day. With Angela’s assistance, Marshanika finalized legal guardianship of Victoria in June of 2024. Victoria expressed excitement about being part of a family again and feeling that she truly belonged in her cousin’s home. Marshanika demonstrated commitment to her role as a caregiver by “understanding the assignment” and ensuring Victoria’s best interests are prioritized.
Since the finalization of guardianship, the family has stayed in touch with Angie. They recently shared that Victoria successfully graduated from High School in June of 2025 and is well-adjusted, supported, and thriving.
Victoria’s journey is a powerful demonstration that family can be a child’s greatest source of strength. Her great-grandparents gave her a foundation of love, and when they were no longer able, her cousin stepped forward to carry that torch. With Greenlight’s support, their family found the resources and stability they needed to thrive together. Today, Victoria is not just surviving, she is flourishing, surrounded by people who believe in her future. Stories like hers honor the resilience of kinship caregivers everywhere and celebrate the enduring truth that when family steps up, hope shines brightest.
