Adrian Charniak

Generations United

GRAND Voice of Illinois

Adrian is a devoted mother, grandmother, and a fierce advocate for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren (GRGs) and Greenlight Family Services. Adrian started as an advocate in 1998, the year her grandson was born with cocaine in his system. She endured a long and complex fight for custody of her grandson whom she has raised lovingly.

In 2006, she was instrumental in drafting the Fostering Connections to Success and Increasing Adoptions Act of 2008 which was signed into law by President George W. Bush on October 7, 2008. The law made numerous changes to the child welfare system, mostly to Title IV-E of the Social Security Act, which covers federal payments to states for foster care and adoption assistance. According to child welfare experts and advocates, the law made the most significant federal improvements to the child welfare system in over a decade.

Adrian founded and facilitates the Gift of Hope support group for GRGs. The group meets in person on Wednesday mornings and has helped more than 2200 kinship families.

In 2020, Greenlight Family Services honored Adrian Charniak with its annual Impact Award for her dedication to grandfamilies.
