Symone Shinton: The Survivors’ Lawyer
In the Love + Light Movement to support survivors of sexual assault, partnerships rooted in lived experience and shared purpose carry profound impact. That is why Greenlight Family Services is honored to feature The Law Office of Symone Shinton, The Survivors’ Lawyer, as our Title Sponsor for Love + Light 2026, a company led by an advocate whose mission truly aligns with our commitment to healing and empowerment for survivors of sexual abuse.
Symone’s Story
For founder Symone Shinton, this work is deeply personal. At just fourteen years old, Symone was sexually abused, an event that has shaped both
her life and her career. Navigating the aftermath, she came to understand not only the horrors of abuse itself but the complex and retraumatizing systems survivors face in the pursuit of justice.
During one of the most difficult periods of Symone’s life, a program offering free therapy became pivotal to her healing journey. The support of a therapist provided the guidance and alignment she needed to pursue a bright future. “I would not have attended college or graduated without access to therapy,” Symone shares. “When I received my graduate degree, the first person I wrote to was my therapist.” Like many survivors, therapeutic support transformed Symone’s life and laid the foundation for the flourishing career she leads today.
It is this lived experience that makes Symone’s sponsorship of Love + Light especially meaningful. The movement’s mission to provide free counseling to college student survivors reflects the same support that once changed the trajectory of her life.
Bridging Justice & Healing
Symone has dedicated her career to representing survivors of sexual abuse, holding institutions accountable, and restoring agency to those she serves. The Law Office of Symone Shinton, headquartered in Chicago, exclusively serves survivors in civil litigation both locally and nationally.
“For those who’ve suffered, in my opinion, the worst abuse a person can go through, it is our job to course correct inequities and prevent further harm.” — Symone Shinton
With a dedicated legal team committed to emotionally supporting clients in their healing journeys, Symone’s office recognizes that quality legal representation depends on survivors’ access to quality therapists. Justice alone is not enough. Survivors often require a network of support that includes both therapeutic care and medical attention alongside legal advocacy. Symone’s work reflects a holistic philosophy: that true empowerment comes when survivors are supported in every dimension of their recovery. This is why collaborative movements like Love + Light are so essential, and Symone has lent her valuable support to the cause.
Survivor-Centered Care
At the heart of both Love + Light and The Law Office of Symone Shinton is a shared commitment to survivor-centered care.
Browsing Symone’s website, survivors are greeted with a welcome to the community and asked, “What are you comfortable sharing with us about
your story?” A departure from the traditional cold and clinical intake forms. And, when a survivor’s needs extend beyond what legal advocacy can provide, Symone’s practice provides a referral to an organization that offers the needed support.
Throughout both Sexual Assault and Mental Health Awareness Month, this partnership is a powerful demonstration of advocacy, empathy, and action coming together to make a real difference. While many partnerships center visibility, when offered opportunities to shine a brighter spotlight on her work, Symone has chosen impact over recognition and redirected focus toward the mission of supporting survivors. In this spirit, our call to action is simple: follow Symone’s example. Give what you can, support survivors in tangible ways, and join the movement that’s ensuring no student survivor in Chicago has to navigate healing alone.
